Most dog breeds are natural swimmers or can be taught to swim. However, there are a few breeds that have trouble in the water because of how they are built or how they look. It is important to note that some dogs in these breeds may still be able to swim, but these breeds as a whole are not known for being good swimmers. There are some dog types that usually have trouble swimming.
A good rule of thumb would be if a dog is a Brachycephalic Dog (short nosed dog). These dogs have difficulty swimming due to their short nose. Really, any short nose dog may not be a good swimmer. Here is a list (mixed not listed but you should include):

Dogs know for not being good swimmers:

  • Bulldog: Bulldogs have brachycephalic (short-nosed) faces and heavy bodies, which makes it hard for them to swim. In water, they may find it hard to stay afloat and may need help or a life jacket.
  • Pug: Like Bulldogs, Pugs have a small body and a flat face, which makes it hard for them to swim. They get tired easily and might need help or to be watched around water.
  • Basset Hound: Basset Hounds have short legs, heavy bodies, and long, low bodies, which can make it hard for them to swim well. It might be hard for them to stay afloat in the water.
  • Dachshunds have long bodies and short legs, which makes it hard for them to swim. Because of the way their bodies move in the water, they may get tired quickly.
  • Boxer: Some Boxers can swim well, but many have thick muscles and a short nose, which can make it hard for them to swim. Different Boxers may have different levels of swimming skill.

Even with breeds that are usually good swimmers, it is important to remember that they should always be watched and brought into the water slowly. Also, every dog is different, so it is essential to figure out how they swim and how comfortable they are in deep water before letting them in.
